Since the job market became very tight in the sense that more and more firms are folding and more and more people are becoming unemployed the fact is that employers are becoming more and more fussy about who they employ!

So even if you are only looking for a temporary job, you could easily find that the competition is fierce, as any good recruitment consultant will tell you!  But the trick is to make sure that you are the best qualified and with a good foundation of qualifications, coupled with a pleasant attitude and a really sunny disposition: then the world really can be your oyster, when it comes to temporary admin jobs.

Qualifications vary, but most companies will want to see some kind of qualification in English and perhaps maths, or at least literacy and numeracy.  The ability to use a computer and to be able to send emails, write letters etc are all pretty basic skills but you need to have them, whether you are working as a receptionist or in a data entry job.

But if you don’t have a string of qualifications to your name, then don’t worry too much.  Sometimes if you can demonstrate on your application form that you obviously are literate and with a good basic skills set, then often employers will give you a test to do at interview: if you pass then you may well get the job.  But if you land a position in this way, make sure that you get some basic qualifications through attending a college course or going to night school.

Once you have your qualifications then you will find that no one can take them away and the truth is that these days you need qualifications for everything, so don’t assume that your dazzling smile or bubbly personality will land you an admin job: you will probably need a lot more than that to start forging a career in admin, since many others possess these qualities as well: what you have to show is that you have the skills to match!
